Trees for Energy Savings
Trees for Energy Savings

In an effort to reduce residential energy costs and provide job training for local youth, The Mile High Million is planting trees in neighborhoods across Denver. Funded as part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to improve community energy efficiency through the City's Greenprint Denver programs, the Trees for Energy Savings program will strategically plant 4,600 trees to shade homes and other structures to reduce energy usage and lower energy bills for residents. The program also strives to spur economic growth by creating jobs.
This program is only available to addresses in the City and County of Denver.

How the program works
This program is only available to Denver households.
- Contact us and let us know that you are interested in a tree. We can be reached by phone at 720-913-0681 or by email at million.trees@denvergov.org or feel free to use our online form by clicking here.
- We will call and have your underground utilities marked.
- Mile High Million staff will visit your property to determine if there is space for a tree to be planted and to mark the location with spray paint and a flag. The flag will be labeled with S, M, or L to note what size class of tree will be planted.
- You will have one week to approve the tree location as marked; a non-response will indicate your approval.
- You will be notified of the time frame in which The Mile High Million Contractor will plant and mulch your new tree.
- Water and watch your new tree grow!
Neighborhood selection and map
Target neighborhoods for the Trees for Energy Savings program are those that fall below the City's 18% canopy coverage goal and neighborhoods not already serviced by The Park People's Denver Digs Trees program that all ready provides free trees to residents. If you are in a Denver Digs Trees neighborhood (brown on the map) contact The Park People to learn more about getting a free tree.

What kind of trees will be planted?
The trees selected for this project were chosen based on their ability to thrive in Denver's soils and climate. These trees were also selected for the quality of shade they provide and their ability to positively impact Denver's air quality. We offer three species in three size classes. The size class selected for your home is based on the amount of space available for a tree to grow without causing any problems when the tree is fully grown.
Small trees
- Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra)
- Frontier elm (Ulmus ‘Frontier')
Medium trees
- Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis)
- Turkish filbert (Corylus colurna)
- Littleleaf linden (Tilia cordata)
Large trees
- London planetree (Platanus X acerfolia)
- American linden (Tilia americana)
- Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata)
